In Remembrance - Father Raffaele Di Bari
Remembering Father Raffaele Di Bari

In October 2000, Rebels shot and killed the outspoken 71-year-old
Raffaele Di Bari, an Italian Combonian missionary as he drove to
Sunday Mass in northern Uganda.

Fighters of the Lord's Resistance Army ambushed Father  Raffaele Di
Bari's car, killing him instantly. Father  Di  Bari had been outspoken in
denouncing northern Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army which is led by
a man claiming to be a spirit medium with supernatural powers, the
rebels are noted for enslaving children to use for fighting, slavery and
sex.  His Comboniano missionary order gave voice to these children,
denouncing the atrocities that the rebels commit almost daily against
women, old people and children. Di Bari, a native of Bari, started work
in Uganda in 1959.

A  man of great vision and faith who dedicated and gave his life to help
the people of Karamoja in Uganda.

Remembering Father Mario and Brother Godfrey

Two Combonian Missionaries, Father Mario Mantovani, 84, and
Brother Godfrey Kiryowa, 29, were killed in Uganda in 2003. On
August 14, while traveling through the remote north-eastern region of
Karamoja they were caught in a furious exchange of fire

The two Combonian Missionaries fell under machine-gun fire during
one of many
cattle raids conducted on a daily basis by numerous rival
Karimojong armed gangs. Brother Godfrey died on the spot, struck by
three bullets while still at the wheel of their vehicle, while Father Mario
was shot dead by a warrior who stole his shoes.

Both man were of great faith, dedicated  to the cause of bringing help  to
the people of Karamoja in Uganda.  Your memories will give us the
strength to continue our  work  in  your name in Karamoja, Uganda.
